eBay have sold StumbleUpon back to its original founders, Garrett Camp and Geoff Smith. On the figure on how much it was sold was not disclosed.
eBay official statement, “it has become apparent that there are few long-term, strategic synergies between StumbleUpon and the eBay Inc. portfolio. The separation of the two companies is the right move to further StumbleUpon’s success while eBay Inc. continues to focus on strategies to connect buyers and sellers across its many platforms.”
eBay bought StumbleUpon back in 2007 for $75 million and this sparks rumors that eBay is having financial difficulties and that Skype which is under eBay umbrella of services is possibly to be sold back to its founders too.
StumbleUpon has released their own official statement, “This change will help StumbleUpon move quickly and stay true to its focus – helping people discover interesting web content. Our goal is to make StumbleUpon the web’s largest recommendation engine and we think this is the best way to get us there.”
The New York Times reported that Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis are trying to raise $1 billion with private equity groups to buy Skype back from eBay. Skype was sold back in 2006 to eBay for $2.6 billion.
What an excellent way to make money eh. Form a start-up, sell it to eBay and buy it back cheap.
