We all know Android is the Linux-based operating system for mobile devices created by Google that was launched back in 2007.
But it seems that the term ‘Android’ legally belongs to one Erich Specht, a software developer and internet applications service provider in the Village of Palatine, Illinois.
It was part of his work project and company name Android Data, where he was legally given the trademark in October 2002 by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
So that clearly states the dude owns the term and Google stole it without permission, despite knowing the legal fact it wasn’t theirs to use.
And indeed Erich put it in legal writing and has sued Google and 47 other international corporations under a US District Court for trademark infringement over their use of the word “Android”.
Well the likeliest option for Google and company now is to have a settlement and I reckon Erich pockets would be filled to the brim.
