Toshiba HD DVD loses out to Blu-Ray

Toshiba HD DVD loses out to Blu-Ray

Toshiba is jumping on the Blu-ray bandwagon it seems. With Blu-ray sales rocketing up 91 percent from Q1 1009 compared to Q1 2008, there’s a surge of demand for Blu-Ray players as HD DVD sales set to dwindle even more.

The recent consumer product hardware and software categories sales revenue figures are out. It is reported that Next Generation DVD Player / Recorder has outsold Home DVD players in retail dollar sales so far. Blu-ray players brand is currently being dominated by Sony Samsung and Panasonic where $376 million of Blu-ray hardware sales is reported worldwide.

Toshiba is planning to launch a Blu-ray player by the end of the year, not much details of it, but the model number is said to be BD 18. Details about the player are unclear and it is not certain whether Toshiba aims to release BD profile 2.0 player or a device with other profile.

This finally marks the final end of the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD, as the former finally gets the upper-hand.
